Move More People
Troubadour Image + Sound exists to help people make a living doing the work they love. We do this by telling our clients’ stories in a way that creates an emotional pull. These are stories that move people, on a human level, to experience and engage with our clients’ work.
The stigma of self-promotion
We know, especially for artists, there is often a stigma associated with self-promotion. We get it. We’re artists, too. When we talk with our artist clients about what they want, they usually say they want more people to experience and engage with their work. This requires more people knowing about your work. This is why we are encouraging you to treat your “brand” (yes, you have a “brand”) more like a business.
We want more people to experience your work, and we want you to be able to make a living doing what you love. When you can do that, you aren’t forced to treat your life’s work like a hobby. That full focus is like the difference between the limited sunlight that seeps through your closed window blind in the morning, and the light that pours in through an open window during the brightest part of the day.
Yawn, not this
- “Buy from me!”
- “Wow is me.”
- ”Woe is me.”
- “This is why everyone loves (or hates) me.”
- “Here’s my inspiring (or self-defeating) life story.”
Whether this kind of self-serving, self-absorbed messaging comes across in a song, in a consultant’s advice, or in an advertisement -- the best way to alienate your audience is by making it all about you in a way that does not connect with the experiences of others.
What we encourage you to do is take your “brand” to the next level, by making important human connections and by promoting something you already really care about and are excited about anyway – your work!
Work that matters
It’s really the same for folks in business for themselves, at least the types we work with. They are doing meaningful work they are good at and passionate about, and they are also ‘in it’ for more than a paycheck. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t be willing to make the sacrifices entrepreneurship requires.
In both our production work and business consulting at Image + Sound, we have the privilege of working with people who a) have the courage to protect what is important and genuine about what they do while simultaneously b) producing work that matters to other people. We believe these two values are the main components required to move people.
Whether you hire us to tell your story or not, if you are doing important work you care about, we want to inspire you to move more people. When you can move more people, you can do more work that matters.
